the story, set in the mid-eighties, begins with the young binodini going to her first radio interview where she is met by two inquisitive journalists, one male (subir banerjee), and the other (rituparno ghosh), a woman. it turns out that rituparno, an editor, has been assigned to interview her, and he is a friend of her husband, mahendra. the two had worked together in the same theatre group. in a quaint and hospitable atmosphere, rituparno and binodini quickly form an unbreakable bond. the rest of the movie chronicles the events that unfold in this quaint and harmonious atmosphere. rituparno ghosh ended up writing six films based on tagore's novels and three more based on his plays. one of his most successful efforts was chokher bali, which was based on rabindranath tagore's novel of the same name. this was, however, his first film in english and, unfortunately, it was a critical failure, but he couldnt stop himself from working on this, which earned him the prestigious national film award. this movie was a watershed in his career, and it was one of the most successful bengali movies of all time.
